FEBRUARY 8, 2001

The California Senate Education Committee on Wednesday approved unanimously a bill that would require education officials to create a voluntary model school course to include a more accurate history of tribes in the state.

Steven TeSam, chairman of the Viejas Tribe, and Barry Brokaw, a lobbyist for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, spoke in favor of the bill yesterday.

The bill, introduced by Sen. Deirdre Alpert (D) now goes to the Appropriations Committee. Alpert hopes to get it passed by June so that it can be included when the state Board of Education reviews the history-social sciences curriculum in 2003. Otherwise, it won't be considered until 2009.
