FEBRUARY 5, 2001

The often divergent views Native Americans and the scientific community hold towards repatriation was the focus of a conference in Denver, Colorado, this past weekend.

Issues such as handling of sacred objects and excavation of sacred sites were discussed. The connection Native Americans have to land was also raised by tribal participants in the conference.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo) addressed attendees and said sacred sites need to be preserved to make sure past horrors like the Sand Creek Massacre never happen again. Campbell last year succeeded in passing legislation declaring the massacre location as a national historic site.
