District defends 'Redskins' mascot

JANUARY 31, 2001 Kansas Unified School District 444 superintendent Milt Dougherty says opinions of local American Indian Movement leaders on the Little River High School's "Redskins" mascot respesent only the viewpoint of a vocal minority. He says he sees nothing wrong with the mascot and that the community supports it. Two members of the local AIM chapter have filed a discrimination complaint with the Department of Justice, who hopes to resolve the issue through mediation within 135 days. Get the Story:
