JANUARY 29, 2001 Gónzalo Gómez Dacal, the Spanish embassy's minister of language and culture, visited Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico last week in what is seen as the beginning of healing between the two nations who first met some 500 years ago. The Pueblo and the Spanish government are working on an exchange program that would send a Zuni and Spanish teacher to learn more about the other's history and language. A student exchange may also occur. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain are visiting the United Staets this spring and the Pueblo has invited both to visit the village which conquistador Francisco Vásquez Coronado attacked in 1540. Gómez Dacal said Spain is interested in working with all of New Mexico's 19 Pueblos. Get the Story:
