A Utah judge on Friday ordered a temporary block on the state's new English-only law in response to a lawsuit filed by several state officials, including a Navajo-speaking county commissioner.

The law would have taken effect yesterday but the judge said it raised First Amendment issues. A hearing has been set for December 14 to discuss the case.

Voters in the state approved the measure by 67 percent. But voters in San Juan County, part of the Navajo Nation, turned it down and its commissioner, Mark Maryboy, says the measure amounts to stealing Navajo language and culture.
