NOVEMBER 8, 2000

Voters in Utah approved a measure making English the state's official language, becoming the 26th state in the nation to do so.

The law requires all government business to be conducted in English. There are exceptions, however, in tourism, health, law enforcement, court proceedings, schools, universities, and libraries.

All counties in the state approved Initiative A, except for San Juan County. The Department of Justice sent observers to the polls in the county to ensure fair treatment of Native American voters.
