Permission to use 'Sioux' name sought

JANUARY 12, 2001 University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella on Thursday told the school he would seek approval from three tribes to continue using the "Fighting Sioux" nickname. Tribes in the state and Native Americans have opposed the use of the name. But the Spirit Lake Tribal Council has recently supported the name. The state Board of Higher Education voted to keep the name but the school's Senate voted yesterday to ask them to retract the decision. Get the Story:
