'Fighting Sioux' statue wanted removed

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2001

Isaac Dog Eagle, a direct descendant of Sitting Bull, has asked the president of the University of North Dakota to remove a statue reported to be of the famed Lakota leader.

The statue, which is part of the new $100 million Ralph Engelstad arena, won't be unveiled until Friday. But sources have told various media it depicts Sitting Bull atop a horse.

Dog Eagle, who is a Standing Rock Sioux tribal council member, says the school does not have permission to depict his ancestor. The statue, however, is owned by wealthy alumnus Ralph Engelstad, not the school, reports The Grand Forks Herald

Engelstad and a reported entourage of 200 are expected to arrive at UND today. He is said to be concerned about his security during the trip because Indian activists are planning to demonstrate outside the arena, but not on arena grounds, at the close of a mascot conference this Friday.
