Indians not found in Mont. schools

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2001 Despite having one of the most progressive Indian education requirements in the nation, it is difficult to find any hint of Indian history or culture in public schools, educators said on Monday at a forum of the National Indian Education Association. Home to 12 tribes, teachers, lawmakers and adminstrators said Montana's requirements are being ignored. There is no funding or deadline to put Indian education into classrooms and Gov. Judy Martz has cut funding, they complained. A report the Montana Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights released in July criticized the state for not living to its constitutional promise to teach about Indian cultures.
