TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2001 National Indian Education Association President Carole Anne Heart gave her "state of the association" address at the group's annual convention on Monday. Heart said major goals and challenges include ensuring the government lives up to its treaties and funds Indian schools. Making sure language and culture are part of Indian education is also important, she said. Lowering the drop-out rate of Indian students is another problem Heart identified. She pointed out that drop out rates have not dramatically improved since 1972 and hover around 30 percent. NIEA is taking place in Billings, Montana, this year. Nearly 3,000 are participating.
