OCTOBER 25, 2000

A threat by the the Otto Bremer Foundation to suspend $80,000 in grants for Native American health programs has upset the University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella.

The Foundation wrote a letter to UND, saying the continued use of its "Fighting Sioux" nickname is racist. The Foundation has provided the school with about $1.24 million in the past five years.

Kupchella said the school is proud of supporting Native American students. According to series of recent surveys conducted by the school, most of them, however, don't feel the school's nickname honors Native Americans.
