OCTOBER 16, 2000

Native Americans in Arizona gathered in Phoenix to protest a measure which would eliminate bilingual education in the state.

Several hundred gathered for a rally at the state capitol. Included were several Navajo Code Talkers, who spoke on the importance of the Navajo language to the United States.

A group called English for the Children is urging the passage of Proposition 203, which would replace bilingual education with a one-year English immersion program. The proposition is aimed at Spanish-speaking students, but tribal leaders say it also is a target against native languages.

In The Arizona Republic, the chairwoman of the group suggested Indian children are being kept "prisoners" in their culture by tribal leaders.
