March to support S.D. county's first Indian sheriff

WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2003 Indian activists in South Dakota will hold a march today to support Bennett County's first Indian sheriff. Last November, Indian voters turned out in unprecedented numbers to elect Charlie Cummings as county sheriff. But now they say the city of Martin is retaliating against their victory by withdrawing from the county law enforcement. City council members deny the issue is racial. The city and the county currently share duties for financial reasons. Get the Story:
