Several Cherokee Nation council members are suing to regain access to tribal assistance funds.

According to the lawsuit, each council member was given access to up to $7,500 a year in discretionary funds. They were allowed to use the money as they see fit.

Cherokee Nation chief Chad Smith cut the program, saying it was rife with abuse. "It just got to the point where we had to intervene. The council was giving it to friends and family and it's improper," Smith told the Native American Times. "For two years we have been trying to do something about this. It's been abused."

The tribal spokesperson says there is a similar program in place to provide money for emergency and other purposes.
