First Nation to be compensated for land deal

The Canadian government is negotiating a settlement with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation to compensate the band for an 18th century land deal.

The First Nation ceded land in what is now Toronto to the British but the records of the 1787 transaction were lost. When the deal was ratified in 1805, the band was paid 10 shillings -- about $35 in today's currency -- for twice the amount of land in the original transaction.

The band's claim was ruled valid by the Indian Claims Commission last year.
