Artist forced to paint over controversial mural

TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2003 A New Mexico artist painted over a mural featuring an Indian after receiving threats and criticism from some members of the local community. Cruz Eagleheart said his mural was egged and he was the victim of harassment. While he was painting it, he said people would drive by and say "Kill the Indian" or "The only good Indian is a dead Indian," Eagleheart was asked to paint the mural by the owner of a liquor store in Santa Fe, who later found out it was located on private property. The owners filed an insurance claim against Eagleheart and the liquor store owner. Get the Story:
