NAJA calls for end to mascot names in media

FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2003

The Native American Journalists Association released its annual Reading Red Report, calling on the news media to stop using Indian mascot names in their coverage of sports.

The report comes on the heels of The Minneapolis Star Tribune's decision to drop its ban on the use of mascots. NAJA says that papers "erode what credibility they have among Native Americans and others, including communities of color and religious communities" by using "offensive" and "racial slurs" in their stories.

NAJA is holding its annual conference, being held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, this week.
