Editorial: Tribes should respect business deals

No business will ever invest on the reservation unless tribes keep their word, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial.

The paper cites a recent case on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, where a hog farm development is in dispute. The old tribal council signed a contract with a company to allow the farm but a newer council invalidated it.

"The issue is whether a contract with a tribe is valid," the paper says. "If it isn't, if a new council can void a contract signed in good faith, why should any outside business ever consider development with any tribe?"
