Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills and Dr. Lori Arviso-Alvord, the first Navajo surgeon, were among the Native role models who spoke to Native youth at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center in Connecticut.

Mills, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, won the gold medal for the 10,000-meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He told students that his heroes include Sioux warrior Crazy Horse.

Arviso-Alvord said Navajo traditions play an important part in her career. "Some of the things you go through won't be easy, but you'll come through and be strong," she said, as reported by The New London Day. "You can go anywhere you want and don't have to rely on anybody else."
