MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2003 Iowa Senator Charles Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, is urging Bush administration officials to reopen the Meskwaki Tribe's casino. In separate letters to Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and National Indian Gaming Commission Chairman Phil Hogen, Grassley said the agencies have hurt the tribe and the local community by ordering the casino closed. He accused the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which Norton oversees, and the NIGC of failing to resolve a tribal leadership dispute. The casino was closed May 23. Two factions of the tribe want it to stay open while they determine who leads the tribe. Get the Story:
