A Navajo Nation council committee approved a gaming compact to authorize Class III gaming in the community of To'Hajiilee.

To'Hajiilee is part of the Navajo Nation but is not contiguous to the tribe's reservation. It is located outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and its residents have long supported gaming.

According to The Gallup Independent, the compact mirrors closely agreements the state of New Mexico signed with other tribes. The To'Hajiilee facility, for instance, would be required to share up to 8 percent of revenues with the state.

The compact goes on to the full council for review. If approved, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. has the authority to veto it. The veto can be overridden before the compact is sent to the state and Department of Interior for final approval.
