Tribes seek alternative to bison slaughter
Facebook Twitter Email
FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2003

The InterTribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) have resurrected an idea the Clinton administration put off as part of a bison management plan for Yellowstone National Park.

The tribes and environmentalists want to prevent the slaughter of bison that wander out of park boundaries. They are proposing a testing and quarantine system aimed at preventing the spread of brucellosis, a disease deadly to cattle, that will also restore bison to tribal lands.

The proposal was considered by the National Park Service at the time it finalized an agreement with the state of Montana in December 2000.
