N.C. Indian students suffer high dropout rates

MONDAY, JUNE 2, 2003 Native American students have the highest dropout rate in North Carolina, according to a new state-sponsored study. The Indian student population has a dropout rate of 2.5 percent, the Advisory Council on Indian Education said. Hispanic students are second at 2.09 percent, followed by African-American students at 1.89 percent, according to the study. In Robeson County, part of Lumbee traditional territory, nearly half of all dropouts were Indian, the report said. More than half of the students in the county are members of the Lumbee Tribe.
