Judge calls for settlement of Nez Perce water rights

FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2003 A federal judge in Idaho set a Tuesday deadline for a settlement to Nez Perce water rights case, The Idaho Statesman reports. The Nez Perce Tribe, the state and the federal government were told to prepare for trial if an agreement can't be reached. Currently, the parties are working with a federal negotiator in an attempt to finalize a settlement. The tribe has fishing rights on the Snake River but its water rights claims are in dispute.
