Alaska tribe elects leaders with help from BIA

FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2003 The Douglas Indian Association of Alaska has finally elected a tribal council. The tribe, which has about 400 members, was without a recognized leadership since January 2001. The Bureau of Indian Affairs told the tribe to hold a new election but one wasn't held until this past March. Even then, only four seats on the nine-member council were up for grabs. So this Tuesday, another election was held to fill the other five seats. The BIA said it will recognize all nine members. Get the Story:
