Alaska tribe elects leaders with help from BIA

FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2003

The Douglas Indian Association of Alaska has finally elected a tribal council.

The tribe, which has about 400 members, was without a recognized leadership since January 2001. The Bureau of Indian Affairs told the tribe to hold a new election but one wasn't held until this past March.

Even then, only four seats on the nine-member council were up for grabs. So this Tuesday, another election was held to fill the other five seats. The BIA said it will recognize all nine members.
