The Department of Justice submitted a legal brief arguing against the use of U.S. courts to hear human rights suits against foreign dictators and international companies, The Washington Post reports.

The brief argues that the cases often have no connection to the U.S. and could hurt foreign policy and the war on terrorism. The State Department objected to the brief, sources told the paper.

The brief was filed in Doe v. Unocal, a 9th Circuit case alleging that Unocal, an oil and gas company, violated the human rights of Burmese citizens during the construction of a $1.2 billion gas pipeline.
