The Department of Transportation won't help the state of South Dakota preserve an Indian site that is three to five hundred years old.

The state asked for federal dollars to turn the Blood Run historic site into a state park but Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said the project doesn't meet federal guidelines.

The site, which straddles the Big Sioux River separating South Dakota and Iowa, includes burial mounds and artifacts.
