Churches and houses of worship can now receive historic preservation grants from the Department of Interior.

Previously, religious institutions were ineligible for grants under the the Save America's Treasures program. The change was made under the Bush administration's faith-based initiative.

Secretary Gale Norton traveled to Boston yesterday to announce the first grant, of $317,000, to a 280-year-old Episcopal church.

About $10 million is available every year under the program.
