A Navajo man convicted of two murders would become the first American Indian on federal death row since the federal death penalty was reinstated in 1994, The Gallup Independent reports.

Lezmond Mitchell, 21, was found guilty of killing Alyce R. Slim, 63, and her nine-year-old granddaughter. The death penalty was invoked because the crime involved a carjacking and crossing of state lines.
