Lezmond Mitchell, a resident of the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, was sentenced to death for killing a grandmother and granddaughter who were on their way to see a medicine man.

Mitchell, 21, carjacked Alyce Slim and her 9-year-old granddaughter, Tiffany Lee. Slim and Lee were beaten, stabbed dozens of times and beheaded with an ax.

The Navajo Nation Department of Justice had asked a federal judge not to impose the death penalty.
