The Department of Interior held a public hearing on Thursday to discuss handing management of the National Bison Range to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation of Montana.

Tribal members, a state lawmaker, a former county prosecutor and others spoke in favor of the proposal. A "handful" of non-Indians opposed it, the Associated Press reported.

An Interior official said a written proposal would be ready for public comment by the end of June.
