A 16-year-old Indian girl has filed suit against the federal government for allegedly failing to protect her from hazing at the Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota.

Toni Backlund alleges that the school was aware of hazing of students on their birthdays and did nothing to protect her. She seeks damages from the U.S.

The school is operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The case, filed in federal district court in South Dakota, is Lindberg v. U.S., No. 03-4097. Kimberly Lindberg is a court-appointed conservator for Backlund.
