Ex-council member cleared of theft from tribe

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2003 The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday reversed the conviction of a former council member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. The decision enables Gerald "Jump" Big Crow to run for office again. He told The Rapid City Journal he plans to do so. Big Crow had been convicted by a lower court of stealing from the tribe. He paid rent on a tribal housing unit that was considered less than appropriate. The 8th Circuit said this did not constitute theft. Get the Story:
