Mapuche Tribe fights encroachments on land

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2003 Mapuche Indian leaders in Chile are fighting commercial tree development that has destroyed their water sources. The Chilean government recognizes the tribe and has set aside "reductions," or reservations, for the Mapuche people. But the tribe's traditional land base has been eroded over the years by farming. Tribal leaders are demanding more land rights and self-governance. Get the Story:
