The North Carolina House and Senate have passed versions of the state budget that cut funds to help the Lumbee Tribe seek federal recognition.

The governor put $50,000 in his budget for the tribe, which is not allowed to go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. A bill under consideration in the U.S. Congress would recognize the tribe outright while another would allow the tribe to apply through the BIA.
