N.C. budget cut funds for Lumbee recognition

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2003 The North Carolina House and Senate have passed versions of the state budget that cut funds to help the Lumbee Tribe seek federal recognition. The governor put $50,000 in his budget for the tribe, which is not allowed to go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. A bill under consideration in the U.S. Congress would recognize the tribe outright while another would allow the tribe to apply through the BIA. Get the Story:
