The University of North Carolina at Pembroke doesn't feel it has to justify the use of an Indian head logo and "Braves" mascot.

"We sit in the middle of 40,000 American Indians, and they really want to hold on to that title," Chancellor Allen Meadors told USA Today. "We want to honor their history and tradition."

The logo was once an Indian with a tomahawk but was changed in 1991.

North Carolina is home to one federally recognized tribe -- the Eastern Band of Cherokees. The Lumbee Tribe has state recognition and is seeking federal status.
