Scholars: Santorum's views on gays come from Pope

FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 2003

Catholic scholars and religious conservatives -- and some friends -- weren't surprised when they heard Senator Rick Santorum, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, compare gays to criminals and say he opposed homosexual acts.

They say those views fit perfectly with Catholic teachings about sexuality. The Vatican says politicians shouldn't put their beliefs aside on issues like abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage, according to The Washington Post.

Santorum, in an interview with the Associated Press, said homosexual acts were "deviant" behavior.
