FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 2003

Despite putting the issue to tribal voters, the Prairie Island Dakota Community of Minnesota could finalize a settlement over nuclear waste without their support.

Ballots for the agreement, under which the tribe could receive up to $50 million, were sent out to tribal members. The deadline was extended to May 2.

Xcel Energy agreed to pay the tribe in exchange for storing more nuclear waste at its facility, which is located next to the reservation.
