Critics accuse Native corporation of slick accounting

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2003

Cook Inlet Region Inc., an Alaska Native regional corporation, reported a $36.6 million profit last year on revenues of $95 million, and the corporation is in solid financial condition, said chief executive Carl Marrs.

But critics say the profit only came through creative accounting and one-time sales of assets. They say the CIRI's businesses are losing money.

Last year's profit pales in comparison to prior years. In 2001, CIRI reported a $434 million in profit, thanks to a lucrative telecommunications investment.
