The nation's tribal colleges have doubled enrollment in the past decade, offering 30,000 students a diverse range of subjects, from cultural education to master's degrees.

The colleges keep Native students from dropping out, according to the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. A study by the group showed that the graduation rate for tribal college students who go onto four-year institutions was 90 percent compared to 10 percent of those who entered directly from high school.

Funding for the colleges comes from the Department of Interior budget and private sources. Most are underfunded and face cuts under the Bush administration's budget.
