Panel releases report on Missouri River protection

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, an independent federal agency, on Wednesday issued a status report on the Missouri River.

The report reviews efforts by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It makes recommendations to the Corps on how to protect heritage resources, including sacred sites and Indian ancestral remains.

Specific to Indian interests, the ACHP said the Corps should:
  • Develop and implement a permanent and effective Missouri River Mainstem System historic preservation program in partnership with Indian tribes and other stakeholders.
  • Build partnerships with Missouri River tribes. and
  • Take immediate steps to control looting and vandalism.
