Bones from Inupiat whale hunt end up in England

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2003 After years of cleaning, political wrangling and even more cleaning, bowhead whale bones left over from an Inupiat hunt in 1996 finally made it to Whitby, England. With the help of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), the bones of the endangered whale flew to England in March 2002. Last month, delegation of Alaskans, including Miss Alaska Peggy Willman, an Inupiat, joined them at the site in Whitby where the bones rest. Willman performed an Inupiat dance at an April 6 ceremony. The bones are set in an arch shape to honor a famous English whaler. Get the Story:
