Editorial: Mascot changes slow but worth it

TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2003 Some Indian mascots are offensive to Native Americans and should be changed, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial today. The paper cites a local school that got rid of its Warriors mascot in response to complaints. It took a while but it was worth it, the paper says. "While some names clearly are unacceptable, much of the Native American anger comes from the portrayals and activities - neon-colored headdresses and fake war whoops, for instance," the paper says.
