Indian boarding school abuse suit seeks $25B
MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2003 A class action lawsuit seeking $25 billion in damages was filed in the federal court of claims for alleged mental, physical and sexual abuse at Indian boarding schools. Six members of the Sioux Nation are the lead plaintiffs. They said they were the victims of abuse and know of, or witnessed, other examples of abuse. The boarding schools were set up by the U.S. government. In most case, control was handed to a local Christian denomination. A suit in Canada was filed on behalf of Aboriginal survivors of abuse.
