A proposal for an urban casino that would benefit two remote Ojibwe tribes has "merit," The Minneapolis Star Tribune says in an editorial today.

The, located in the Twin Cities area, would help the Red Lake and White Earth, the paper says.

The proposed state-tribal casino is best understood as an overdue correction to the Indian gaming structure that has evolved in the past dozen years," the paper says. "Casinos have been a bonanza for a few tribes close to the metro area, while bringing almost no benefit to the Red Lake and White Earth bands, whose members comprise nearly 70 percent of the state's Indian population."

A Minnesota House committee rejected a bill for the casino but the tribes and their backers haven't given up.
