THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2003

The Eastern Band of Cherokees is too busy to meet with Lumbee tribal leaders, The Fayetteville Observer reports.

Lumbee chairman Milton Hunt wrote the Cherokee Tribe nearly a month ago in hopes of opening up a dialogue. The Cherokee council responded that it was busy with an upcoming election and budget planning.

Rep. Chuck Taylor (R), whose district includes the Cherokee Reservation, has introduced a bill that would affect the Lumbee Tribe's recognition effort. Hunt said the meeting wasn't called to necessarily address the concerns.
