Lumbee Tribe criticizes competing bill

THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2003 The Lumbee Tribe opposes a bill that forces resolution of federal status through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a spokesperson said. Rep. Chuck Taylor (R-N.C.), chairman of the House Interior Appropriations subcommittee and a member of the Congressional Native American Caucus, introduced the bill. It competes with another that would recognize the tribe outright. Arlinda Locklear, a prominent Indian law practitioner and Lumbee tribal member, says Taylor's bill is meant to "derail" the full recognition bill. Get the Story:
