A bill to expand a nuclear waste storage at a facility near the Prairie Island Indian Community cleared a House panel in Minnesota.

The bill allows Xcel Energy to increase the number of waste storage casks from 17 to 39. The company says this will keep the plant running for 10 more years.

The plant sits 600 yards from the Prairie Island Reservation. The tribe wants to see the waste taken away but has entered into an agreement with Xcel that could bring up to $50 million.
