Nuclear plant in Minn. faces debate over future

MONDAY, MARCH 17, 2003

The future of a nuclear power plant next to the Prairie Island Indian Community in Minnesota is being debated by the Legislature.

Xcel Energy wants approval to store more waste at the aging facility, a move opposed by the tribe. It also needs to upgrade and repair critical equipment.

But unless given the authority to expand storage, Xcel says there is no need to do the repairs. With the additional capacity, the company says the plant will be forced to shut down in 2007.
