Tribal water project faces delays due to Bush

MONDAY, MARCH 17, 2003 Facing a massive cut in President Bush's fiscal year 2004 budget, the Mni Wiconi water project in South Dakota is fighting for its life. The project will bring clean water to the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations and to other rural communities in western South Dakota. Officials say the cut will delay the project -- and thus increase its overall cost. Congress is funding the project in 2003 with $30.7 million. Bush's 2004 request is $6.8 million. Get the Story:
